I'm Lily Tomlin and today I'm reading Hey, That's My Monster |
13s |
written by Amanda Knoll and illustrated by Howard McWilliam. |
19s |
Tonight, when I looked under the bed for my monster, I found this note instead. |
25s |
So long, kid. |
26s |
Gotta go. |
27s |
Someone needs me more than you do. -Gabe |
31s |
What?! Gabe was MY monster! |
34s |
Nobody needed him more than me! |
37s |
But someone sure DID need a monster - my little sister Emma. |
44s |
Now that Emma slept in a toddler bed, she like to... |
47s |
...climb out, roam the house, and play noisy games at night. |
53s |
I knew a monster would keep her in bed so she could fall asleep. |
56s |
But not MY monster! |
59s |
I had to get Gabe back. |
1:02 |
I tiptoed across the hall to Emma's room. |
1:06 |
She wasn't even there. |
1:08 |
But Gabe was! |
1:11 |
I gulped, zoomed across the carpet, |
1:14 |
and leaped onto Emma's bed before Gabe could grab my toes. |
1:18 |
"Gabe, " I whispered. |
1:22 |
"Please go back to our room. |
1:25 |
I'll get Emma to sleep." |
1:27 |
"You?!" he snorted. |
1:29 |
"You're gonna get her to sleep? |
1:32 |
Ha! That's a good one! |
1:34 |
But you know what? I like you, kid, so I'll give you three chances. |
1:39 |
If she's not asleep, I'll be back!" |
1:44 |
And Gabe was gone. |
1:47 |
Just then Emma toddled into the room. |
1:50 |
She clearly needed a monster. |
1:53 |
Maybe she didn't know how to get one. |
1:54 |
But I did. |
1:56 |
"Hey, Emma," I said. |
1:59 |
"Let's play. |
2:00 |
Can you knock on the floor?" |
2:02 |
Emma knocked - with a dinosaur. |
2:05 |
It worked. |
2:07 |
I heard some creaking under Emma's bed. |
2:10 |
Then something sniffled. |
2:12 |
It squelched and dripped. |
2:15 |
So far so good, I thought. |
2:18 |
This monster sounds scary enough for Emma. |
2:21 |
But Emma kept on playing. |
2:23 |
A slime-covered monster slid out. |
2:26 |
It oozed toward Emma. |
2:29 |
"Icky!" she laughed, wiping one of the monster's noses. |
2:34 |
"Icky! Wipe!" |
2:36 |
Emma wasn't scared at all! |
2:38 |
"Excuse me," I said to the mucus monster. |
2:41 |
"I didn't catch your name." |
2:43 |
"By dabe is Agatha," she said through stuffed noses. |
2:47 |
"Tibe for bed, Ebba." |
2:51 |
Emma giggled and wiped some more. |
2:53 |
I knew this wouldn't work. |
2:55 |
"Thanks, Agatha. |
2:57 |
Nice try. |
2:59 |
But I think we need a monster with claws." |
3:02 |
Agatha snuffled, and then she was gone. |
3:06 |
"Emma," I coaxed again, "knock knock." |
3:10 |
She knocked on the floor - with a teapot this time - |
3:14 |
and I heard more creaking. |
3:17 |
Then a slippery tail slithered out from under the bed. |
3:23 |
The second monster rasped, "I'm Cynthia." |
3:28 |
Much better, I thought when I saw the jagged claws. |
3:34 |
Cynthia might be the perfect monster for Emma. |
3:38 |
But Emma blinked and said, "Pretty!" |
3:42 |
Then she decorated Cynthia's tail with bracelets. |
3:46 |
"Ugh," Cynthia snarled. |
3:48 |
"I'm not here to play dress up! |
3:51 |
I'm here to scare you into bed!" |
3:54 |
Cynthia rattled louder, but Emma danced to the beat. |
3:59 |
"I'm sorry, Cynthia," I said. |
4:02 |
"This isn't going to work." |
4:04 |
"Well, I never!" she sniffed, and then she was gone. |
4:11 |
"Cynfia, come back!" |
4:13 |
Emma demanded, stomping on the floor. |
4:16 |
Excellent, I thought. |
4:18 |
Maybe that would summon the perfect monster for Emma. |
4:23 |
Tentacles swarmed from under the bed, and an icy voice called, "Whooooo......" |
4:31 |
I shrank back in horror, but Emma was enchanted. |
4:35 |
"Whooooo's out of bed?" the monster continued. |
4:41 |
"Come to Vla-a-adimir...." |
4:46 |
Emma high-fived one of the tentacles, and the third monster emerged. |
4:52 |
I already had doubts about this one, but he was my last chance. |
4:57 |
"Vladimir," I asked. |
4:59 |
"can you get Emma to sleep?" |
5:02 |
"Yes-s-s-s," he hissed, reaching for Emma. |
5:07 |
"I can GET her!" |
5:09 |
Emma giggled and hopped over the tentacles like jump ropes. |
5:13 |
"Oh, no!" I blurted. |
5:15 |
"She's not supposed to be having fun! |
5:18 |
This'll never work!" |
5:20 |
Vlad's tentacles drooped, he slunk under the bed, and he was gone. |
5:25 |
"Sorry, Vlad..." I called. |
5:28 |
Boy , was I sorry. |
5:31 |
I was about to lose Gabe - forever. |
5:35 |
Now Emma was coloring. |
5:37 |
And singing. |
5:38 |
"Blabamir, bla, bla, Cymfia, ya ya, Agafa, fa, fa..." |
5:44 |
Gabe must have heard her, because he was back. |
5:49 |
"That's it, kid," he grunted. |
5:51 |
"You had your three tries. |
5:54 |
Now it's MY turn. |
5:56 |
Gabe's green ooze sizzled across the floor as he growled, |
6:03 |
"Put. |
6:04 |
The crayon. |
6:06 |
Down." |
6:08 |
Emma peered at my hulking, sharp-clawed monster and said, "Fuzzy." |
6:15 |
"Hey, Gabe!" I cheered. |
6:17 |
"Emma isn't afraid of you!" |
6:20 |
"WHAT?!!" |
6:22 |
Gabe burst out from under the bed and loomed over Emma. |
6:26 |
Steam spurted from his ears. |
6:29 |
"Get. |
6:30 |
Into. |
6:31 |
Bed!" |
6:33 |
Gabe thundered. |
6:35 |
Emma hopped up. |
6:36 |
But she kept singing, "Fuzzy, fuzzy monster." |
6:39 |
"Gabe," I said, "Emma's not scared enough to fall asleep. |
6:44 |
Please, let's go back to our room." |
6:46 |
"No can do, kid," Gabe growled, "I may not be the perfect monster for Emma, |
6:53 |
but I'm the best so far. |
6:56 |
At least she's in bed now. |
6:57 |
I gotta stay here. |
6:59 |
You're on your own." |
7:01 |
I knew Emma needed Gabe, but he was MY monster. |
7:05 |
How was ever going to get to sleep without him? |
7:09 |
Just then, we heard a tiny noise. |
7:13 |
hic. hic. hic. |
7:17 |
Emma froze. |
7:18 |
Gabe and I peered under the bed. |
7:21 |
"Stella, what are you doing here?" |
7:24 |
Gabe asked. |
7:25 |
"Hi, Gabe," Stella said, tugging on her tutu. |
7:30 |
"You forgot - hic - your snack. |
7:33 |
Mama thought - hic - you'd be hungry, so she - hic - sent this." |
7:39 |
Who knew? |
7:40 |
Gabe had a little sister too! |
7:44 |
I thought Stella's hiccups were cute, but Emma obviously didn't. |
7:49 |
Stella sure noticed. |
7:51 |
She tiptoed closer, hiccupping with every step. |
7:55 |
hic. hic. hic. |
7:59 |
From under the covers, Emma squeaked, "SHOO!" |
8:04 |
"Shoo?" |
8:06 |
Stella repeated. |
8:07 |
"Oh! Shoe! |
8:09 |
That's where toes go. |
8:12 |
I loooove toes." |
8:14 |
Stella crept toward Emma's feet. |
8:18 |
Emma squealed, scrunched in her feet, and giggled, "No toes, no toes!" |
8:25 |
Gabe laughed. |
8:26 |
"Stella, it looks like you're the perfect monster for Emma. |
8:30 |
Now, if you don't mind, you can get her to sleep while I get back to what I do best." |
8:36 |
Stella nodded. |
8:39 |
"Hic!" |
8:40 |
I sighed with relief and switched off Emma's lamp. |
8:44 |
Then I ran to my room, leaped into bed, and scrunched in my feet so Gabe couldn't get them. |
8:50 |
I shivered happily. |
8:52 |
Emma had Stella. |
8:55 |
I had Gabe. |
8:57 |
Everything was back to normal. |
9:00 |
I shivered again. |
9:02 |
We'd all be asleep in no time. |
9:05 |
The end. |
9:08 |
I enjoyed reading this book so much. |
9:11 |
It was so much fun. |
9:13 |
And I hope you enjoyed listening to it and you enjoy reading it. |
9:17 |
That's the most fun. |
9:19 |
Is you read it yourself and then you imagine the monsters and you imagine all the noises |
9:24 |
they make and the "ooo's" and the slithering. |
9:28 |
And that's how it is when you read. |
9:29 |
Every book you read takes you into another world. |
